If you want a bathroom that’s unique, then build on an item that’s significant to you. Perhaps you have a curtain that you love or an antique medicine cabinet that you stumbled on at a flea market. Let those items be the inspiration for the rest of the room.

The bathroom design elements will impact the comfort of the user, so consider how the room will be used. The elements you include in your interior design will depend on who is going to use it. Beautiful bathrooms are not that difficult to achieve if you think outside the box. If you love to daydream about a vacation you’ve taken, then why not bring those memories to life in it? Tiling can be used to recreate the look of the ocean, paint colors can bring back the warmth of a sunset or a photograph from your vacation can be framed and displayed on the vanity.

If you haven’t gone on your dream vacation yet, then bring the location home to you. Use metal framed Japanese lanterns to give it an Asian feel. Or, use rich colors to create a Moroccan retreat. Imagine how gorgeous plush hand towels will look tucked into an antique chest!

Even your favorite artwork or clothing designs can be fodder for inspiration. If there is a print or pattern that you’re wild about, then transform them into bathroom remodeling ideas. Perhaps your best hounds tooth jacket can inspire a unique tiling pattern.

The bold colors of a Picasso can influence your paint colors. Most paint stores can color-match paints to come very close to fabric samples, and you can create stencils to help you apply a funky design to the walls.

If you’re a nature nut, go crazy with soothing blues and greens to create the tranquility of a forest in your bathroom. If you’re a movie buff, then why not use old movie posters for wallpaper? Besides being gorgeous, it’s built in reading material!

Key Points To Design Your Bathroom

15 April 2008

After a long and busy day, you surely won’t skip the night without a good bath. Everyone will probably agree that after a few minutes while you settle down, a good bath is invigorating, relaxing and refreshing. A friend once said that taking a good bath is symbolic to spiritual intimacy that she does to refresh her soul after she goes through the day. No one will trade the feelings of being de-stressed without feeling distress because bathing can also wash out feelings of anger, frustration and disappointment. For some people, it does appear likely that way.

A good bathroom is simple and not complicated. There are key points to consider when designing or having someone assist you to design it. There is a tremendous amount of intimacy when one retreats to its comfort; an intimacy with the self that can be achieved by observing appropriate lighting, installing the right fixtures and using the correct tools.

Your bathroom should appear rectangular or square-like. This partition in your house must have a space in the center where one can easily see the other portions including the wash sink area, the miniature counter top, bath tub, shower and the toilet. This will create a soothing feel.

A transparent glass for the shower’s door can provide the outside view. The need for an outside view insinuates or implies a spacious room even when it is just small.

Imagine yourself walking towards your bathroom in broad daylight, a window, whether small or large can help enough to give you an idea about the weather. Aside from illumination, it is also ideal for ventilation, where you can get not only a glimpse of the sun but also a smell of fresh air.

Check your city’s building codes regarding dimensions and measurements to provide the required clearance. Make sure that you strictly follow these codes.

Floors and walls must be appropriately done according to your preferences, if you choose to have them tiled. Choose one with calming hues but are durable, dainty and can facilitate easy cleaning. Do not forget to apply water-resistant paints for a good finish. A good area rug will not only accentuate your bathroom but it is also a useful protection for cold feet.

Choose designs of bathroom fixtures that will speak of your personality, the theme and design of the room itself. Excellent quality and durability should top your list when choosing these fixtures so that they will last longer.

There are several miniature designs all around your bathroom such as cabinets, shelves, towel bars and many more to mention. It is important that they are associated in color, theme and design. Choose durable and high quality brands. While you notice that private rooms in a house are located away from the main entrance door, the same principle applies to other partitions and compartments in your bathroom. This provides a feeling of security, privacy and intimacy.

If you probably are about to take a shower this time of the day, check how well do you know your bathroom and how well do you see yourself connected to it. The significant thing about it is being able to enjoy the everyday ordinary things extraordinarily.

Growing The Delighful Flowering Crabapple Tree

8 April 2008

Flowers are one of the most delightful creations that nature has to offer but not all flowers need to grow at ground level. In fact, the flowering crabapple tree offers a gorgeous cascade of flowers right at eye level.

Crabapple trees are very popular for being able to provide aesthetics throughout the year. They give delight in all four seasons. During springtime, the delicate colors of the buds and leaves of crabapple trees can be very pleasant. The buds can be of one color and the opened flowers can be of a different hue.

Come autumn, the fruits of the crabapple tree will surely match the life of the environment. The fall makes the colors of the fruit become even more vibrant while the snow during winter can provide the best accent to the landscape. Flowering crabapples are definitely the best pick for use in your own home, even in schools, parks and commercial areas.

The flowers of crabapple tree are to be expected in full bloom during late April up to middle of May. There are classifications of the flowers of the crabapple tree. There is the single type with only five petals in it and the semi-double has six to ten petals. The double type has more than ten petals. Double-flowered crabapple trees will be able to keep the flowers longer but the fruits are not abundant. The colors of the flowers can range from the almost pearly white, delicately fine pinks or even a deep red. Some can even grow crabapple trees with flowers having coral or salmon color.

Given all these wonderful things about a flowering crabapple tree, it is only expected that one will aim to have one in his or her own yard. Crabapple trees, like any other trees, have peculiar characteristics and needs that will require certain responsibilities from the owner. Here are some pointers to take note in growing your own flowering crabapple tree.

1. Size of the Flowering Tree

Flowering crabapples can differ from one another in their sizes.

On the average, most crabapple grows at 15 to 20 feet height while some types average eight feet. There are certain cases when they reach up to 40 feet.

Taking this consideration seriously will help you utilize well the space in your yard. At the same time, it will ensure that your crabapple gets enough space to maximize its growth.

2. Shape of the Crabapple

The crabapple tree can take on different tree shapes. The crabapple can have a weeping, horizontal, columnar, rounded, pyramidal or vase-shaped structure.

The kind will generally depend on the growth habit of the tree.

3. Type of Soil

The growth of the flowering crabapples will depend largely too on how well the owner selected the site where it will be planted.

It is best to check the nutrient and ph levels of the soil that will best suit the crabapple.

Crabapples can best grow in rich loam. A loam basically is a combination of sand, clay and salt.

This flowering tree can also grow in other soil types. Just make sure that it gets a good drainage.

Maintain good moisture in the soil but avoid getting it excessively moisturized.

Acidic soil best supports the crabapple like with a pH ranging from 5.0 to 6.5. If needed, make the proper adjustments to make the environment favorable to the tree.

4. Exposure to Sunlight

Flowering crabapples require direct exposure to sunlight throughout the day to ensure the development of the flowers, as well as the fruits.
This means the trees must be planted on locations where they can access the sun for at least eight hours every day.

5. Avoiding Plant Stress

Crabapples are very sensitive to stress. Unfavorable environmental factors can affect the development of these trees.

The stress can result to a very unhealthy disposition of the plants like poor color of the leaf or scorches.

Some of the factors that can stress the crabapple include insects or pests, lack or excess in water supply, insufficient sun exposure or even kids who may damage the tree.

Conclusion

Flowering crabapple trees are delightful addition to your garden. Make sure that you plant and tend it well to ensure the beauty of this creation in your landscape.

Chainsaw Technology – Evolving At A Rapid Pace

7 April 2008

I remarked the other day to a buddy of mine that if chainsaws get any lighter, we’ll have to attach specially made weights to them to prevent them from floating away.

There’s no doubt that chainsaws are becoming lighter today and chainsaw users are reaping the benefits with better and easier to handle machines.

Technology has encroached significantly in all areas of industry and one has to marvel at the evolvement of chainsaws during the last decade.

The latest batch of lightweight models haven’t compromised on power and the emphasis on safety is extremely important. Manufacturers seem to be in some sort of technology race to see who can produce the most nimble chainsaw on the market. I looked at some of the models released during the past few months at a local trade show and I must say, woodcutters have some difficult choices to make. If you have been a brand loyalist in recent years you may have to start “thinking outside the box.”

I posed the question to several chainsaw dealers that if I was in the market with a mid sized budget, what could I expect for my investment. Of the number of impressive models available. Stihl’s MS230 and MS 230 C-BE models seemed to gain a strong nod of approval from the group.

It seems woodcutters have a lot of say in proceedings and manufacturers are sitting up and taking notice. One of the “bug bears” for chainsaw users over the years has been the starting functionality. Easy to start chainsaws are now here to stay and the tip is it is only going to get better. The addition of a quick chain adjuster to the above mentioned models means that adusting chain tension via tools is a thing of the past.

One complaint I hear continually amongst chainsaw users is that the weight of chainsaws can sometimes cut productive cutting time down to a minimum. Tiredness is something that can creep into the scenario and is one of the safety aspects a chainsaw user should take particular note of. I’m amazed at the technology that chainsaw manufacturers are able to include today as machines become less and less cumbersome. To give you an example of how much lighter chainsaws are becoming and how rapidly it’s happening I randomly looked at Stihl’s lightest chainsaw, the MS 192T. Would you you believe it is a whopping 26% lighter than it’s predecessor.

The introduction of lightweight chainsaws across the board means that operators now have more flexibility when it comes to the tougher pruning jobs. Again, the lightweight design of today’s chainsaws are playing a major part in cutting down the danger aspect to users. The fact they can be controlled more effectively means there is less chance of any sudden vibration causing the user to lose control.

Don’t get too complacent though; chainsaws are still a dangerous piece of equipment however, any refinements from a woodcutter’s perspective are a bonus.

Have Green In Your Yard All Year With The Ever Green Evergreen

7 April 2008

For landscape artists, green is the perfect background. It provides tranquility and is cool in the eye. By staring at a green landscape, the eyes relax and are soothed.

Because ever green shrubs are in constant foliage all year round, these bushes are preferred by most gardeners (or people who love gardening.) Evergreen shrubs that have needles are used in hedges. They can be trimmed to a certain shape, thus made more appealing.

Here are some evergreen shrubs you might want to consider planting in your garden.

1. Glossy Abelia
Comes from Chinese shrubs it has a dark green foliage. It is very compact it can be molded into perfect mounds.

2. Flowering Maple Bush
Usually four inches, flowering maple bush continues to flourish even during winter. They are referred to as ‘maples’ because of its shape. Alternate name is “Chinese Lanterns”.

3. Wickwar Flame
During spring and summer, wickwar flame has lime green leaves on the sides of its branches. When fully exposed to the sun, it shows shades or orange and yellow. Then when autumn and winter comes, the leaves become red.

4. California False Lilac
Often blooms on April to July. Its peak is during May and June. It blooms again during autumn.

5. Dwarf Evergreens in Bowls
If an ever green is planted in a bowl, caring for it is easier. Often times, these ever greens in pots are given as gifts. Dwarf evergreen in bowls do not require much watering but they shouldn’t be exposed under the sun too much.

6. Cream Ball
The foliage of this yellow-green shrub turns white. It is perfectly round, similar to a shape of a softball. Later on, they become shaggy. Clipping must be done once in a while.

7. Mexican Orange Blossom
Its leaves are narrow and has a glossy green color. When it blooms, the flowers come in the form of clusters, thus getting the name ‘orange blossoms.’ It is small and has large pink buds which open. The buds have a pink blush underneath the petals. It usually blooms from April through June. It also blooms again in September and October.

8. Pink Rock Rose
Because of its pre-pubescent stems, the pink rock rose earned the nickname ‘hairy rockrose.’ It neither comes from a thorned rose nor a rose family. It is a low-growing shrub. It has gray green leaves and multiple pink flowers. The flowers bloom only in one day, but you would hardly notice its short life span because it keeps on flowering week after week.

9. Spanish Gum Cistus
It is three to four feet high and is very wide. It has long slender green leaves. Underneath, it has a grayish green color. It usually blooms in summer. Spanish Gum Cistus is often used for flavoring and also for perfume.

10. Silver Pink Rock Rose
It is tissue-paper thin. It has a pinkish color and also has bits of yellow and white. Its length is two inches and blooms in May and lasts until July. The shrub normally lasts for only one day, two day max, but because it produces continuously you would hardly notice it diminishing.

11. Rock Rose
Nickname is ‘Elma.’ These big flowers are similar to white roses. They bloom in May til July. It has a shiny evergreen foliage and smells wonderful when you whiff it in the air.

12. White Rock Rose
It starts blooming in May and this continues until August. It grows to four feet and has a long life span. When it reaches it third year, it is at its peak and is even able to reach five feet. The owner can sheer it if he wants it shorter.

Because shrubs are easier to take care of than your usual plant, gardeners or people who love to garden often have these in their lot. Choose the right shrub that is right for your terrain. Study the conditions of the ground you will plant it in.

The ironic thing about evergreens is that when winter comes, some of them changes their color to orange. But then again, there are some shrubs that stay the same color green all year round.

Evergreens are for those who don’t have to think too much about gardening. But that does not mean they do not care to their plants. Ask the nearest plant expert to assist you with what your evergreen needs. But if you do want a plant and just don’t have the time for it, get those one in pots. The Dwarf Evergreen is perfect for you then.

Growing Perennials

6 April 2008

Perennials, by definition, are plants that live for three or more years. This would stretch from dandelions to redwoods and many species in between. When refers to perennials, they are talking about flowering garden plants with herbaceous stems. These plants die down to the soil’s surface in winters while the root remains alive and ready to send fresh growth in the spring. The durability of the roots sets them apart. They come back unprompted year after year and set the garden ablaze with color from April to November. Perennials flower abundantly and multiply without being coaxed. They are easy to grow and tolerate considerable neglect. Perennials include delphiniums, columbines, daisies and peonies.

Annuals sprout from seed, bear fruit, seeds and flowers and die – all in a single year.
Biennials spend their first years growing, produce flowers and seeds in the second year- and then die. Sweet William, foxglove, Canterbury bell and wallflower are some of the common biennials.

Flowering perennials are noticeably long lived. The first recorded appearance of peonies dates back to 1864. Delphiniums thrive for seven to eight years where summers and winters are moderate. Day lilies, coreopsis, acanthus, lavender cotton and false indigo grow beautifully in a warm and humid climate. The dry and windy places do not lack for perennials. Oriental poppies, garden phlox, bearded irises, day lilies, chrysanthemum and many others flourish there.

The first challenge while growing perennials is to obtain continuity of color by planting various varieties to flower at different times. The aim is to present a charming array of color from early spring to late fall. However, a rare perennial flowers all of the growing season.
Another problem is to keep the assorted perennials from overgrowing one another in the beds and creating a mess. Some perennials like chrysanthemums spread so fast that they require drastic control methods like annual digging up and division of the roots. Others never outgrow their allotted space. Therefore, the planting has to be planned well in advance taking the characteristics of the various plants into consideration.

The third challenge while growing perennials is to obtain maximum results with minimum work. Good perennial gardens require plenty of air circulation. Stagnant air encourages plant diseases especially in humid places. They require abundant sunshine. Day lilies, columbine and leopards bane will tolerate shade whereas some like Japanese anemone, plantain lilies, yellow corydalis, western bleeding heart and Siberian bugloss will thrive in it. However, the majority will sprout spindly stems with few flowers without ample sun.

Finally, good perennial gardens require well-prepared soil. The soil should be moisture retentive as well as well drained. It should be rich enough to sustain the plants for many years and should be loose enough to permit air and water to reach the roots.
Not all gardens have all the characteristics. Given the air circulation and the sunshine, the rest can be prepared. Once the garden area has been finalized, you can move onto planning the type and location of the various plants.

The Hidden Benefit Of Water Gardens

6 April 2008

When homeowners decide to install a water garden on their property, they often expect a beautiful area where they can relax in peaceful contemplation. However, once you’ve had a water garden in your yard for a few weeks, you will start to notice that you are not the only one who is enjoying the beauty of your new landscaping feature. A water garden can be an attractive draw for all kinds of wildlife. When you have a water garden, you are rolling out the red carpet for some of nature’s most beautiful creatures from delicate butterflies to quirky tree frogs in bright, eye-catching colors. A water garden brings the unique wildlife of your region out of the shadows so that you can get to know them, and you just might be surprised at what you discover.

Some of the Earth’s most beautiful insects are likely to be drawn to your water garden. Many water garden owners are delighted to start each day by discovering a few energetic dragonflies hovering over the water’s surface, or skimming through the air with their bright blue and green bodies flashing in the sun. Dragonflies lay their eggs in water, which makes them common visitors to water ponds. In addition to dragonflies, you are likely to see a host of butterflies who will likely be drawn to your water garden in order to drink. The cool, clean moving water of your tended water garden looks very attractive to these tiny creatures who are constantly in search of a few droplets of crisp water to sip on.

In addition to creatures that are lovely to look at, you will also notice that your water garden draws animals who create an enchanting live soundscape. Birds of all shapes and sizes will want to spend time visiting your water garden where they can bathe and drink to their hearts’ content. This will leave your yard filled with the pleasant, beautiful tones of all manner of bird song. At night, when the birds have flown off to sleep in safer areas, your water garden will likely play host to a bevy of frogs that will croak you a lullaby in deep bass tones.

One of the most exciting things about the fact that a water garden attracts wildlife of all shapes and sizes is that getting up close and personal with all of these types of animals enables you to observe them at all stages of life. A water garden often provides you with an opportunity to see frogs develop from tadpoles, and to watch different kinds of butterflies come and go with the seasons. Chances are, if you spend enough time watching the different visitors to your water garden, you are bound to learn a few things about nature that you never knew, and that is the very best kind of surprise.

Your Water Garden Oasis

6 April 2008

A water garden can provide you with a level of relaxation and calm that you may never have even dreamed was possible. Adding a water garden to your backyard can transform your property’s outdoor space from a run of the mill lawn to a transporting, beautiful place that makes you feel instantly peaceful and tranquil.

One reason why a water garden creates such a calming atmosphere is due to the effects of the gentle noise of bubbling, flowing water. Water creates what is known as white noise, a calming atmosphere of sound that some experts believe is reminiscent of the sounds heard in the safety of the womb. White noise has been shown to reduce stress and tension, and regular exposure to environments rich with white noise, such as a water garden, may help lower blood pressure and reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke. The sound of water helps to block out other, less pleasant ambient sounds like traffic or the activity of noisy neighbors. The white noise of a water garden can create an atmosphere that makes you feel as though you are millions of miles away from your daily life, in a place of safety and calm that nothing can intrude into.

Another reason for the powerfully positive effect that a water garden has on the attitude of anyone sitting nearby is that a water garden has a tangible effect on climate and temperature. The evaporation process that is a natural part of any water garden disperses water molecules through the air surrounding the garden. The humidity of the air around your water garden is great for your skin, and its gentle, dewy moisture can help you feel refreshed after even a long and hectic day. In addition, a pond, waterfall, or other water garden feature provides subtle climate control, creating a very pleasant area around your water garden where temperatures are milder and more comfortable than elsewhere in your yard. During even the hottest summer day, your water garden will provide a comfortably cool spot where you can relax.

Because it is easier to maintain than most landscaping options, a water garden will leave you free to enjoy its beauty without worrying about devoting hours to its care. A water garden can help you make pleasant, soothing relaxation a viable part of your daily schedule. When you stroll into your backyard to enjoy your water garden, you are telling the world that you are ready to relax and unplug. By building your own water garden, you can enjoy the beautiful sight, soothing sounds, and comfortable climate that a water garden provides on a daily basis. Having a personal sanctuary in your own backyard is invaluable because it gives you a chance to unwind completely without having to do anything more than step out your door.
