Make Your Home Beautiful With Landscaping

10 January 2009

Planting done near to the house foundation, is of great importance because it may make or break the appearance of the home as it is seen from the street. Yet, it is often done with little understanding of the problems involved; disappointing results are all too common.

There will always be differences of opinion as to the kinds of plants to be used. Some prefer narrow-leaved evergreens, some want flowering shrubs, and still others use a combination of the two. Narrow-leaved evergreens will provide green color through the year with some variation in the different varieties.

Flowering shrubs will have bare stems in winter, some of which are very colorful, but will give an informal effect, as well as life and color to the planting during the summer. Broad-leaved evergreens, where they may be grown successfully, will be green throughout the year and give some flower color in spring. With these facts in mind each home owner should use the plants of his choice.

Pit the Planting to Style of House

Probably there is better reason for more planting around the base of a house having a high foundation wall exposed above the soil line than there is around a house with low foundation walls. A large-growing shade tree placed 15 to 20 feet from the corner of a house minimizes rather effectively the high appearance of a house that is narrow and upright. Plants with a horizontal branching habit help, as do structural devices such as window boxes, window blinds,

Regardless of the kinds of plants to be selected, they should all be chosen and planted in positions where they will not be too large for the area when they mature. Most home owners can get agreeable results by working with enlarged photographs, beginning with a picture of the front of the house and then views of the other sides.

Drawings, made to scale, of each elevation of the house can be used with equal effectiveness. In either case, place a piece of tracing paper over the photograph or drawing and, with a soft pencil or crayon, block in the various foliage masses you think will look best.

Usually it is best to have low-growing shrubs at the sides of the doorway, somewhat symmetrically space.. All entrance plantings, however, need not be symmetrical. If there is an unbroken, large wall space at one side of the door, a tree-form shrub or a vine might fill that space and provide an attractive variation from the more usual design.

In the case of a split-level house, taller growing shrubs or small trees may be used at the high corners and the low corners may be treated as for a one-story house.

What planting is done along wall spaces will be governed largely by the length of that wall and the location of the door, windows, and wall spaces. Uninterrupted wall spaces, several feet wide, between a door and a window or between two windows, may need a foliage mass somewhat higher than the window sill.

Sometimes a small-growing tree is planted beside a window to provide shade, to block the view from the street into the room, or for some less obvious reason, such as variety from the more usual design. If either of these plantings is located somewhat to one side of the wall space, it will usually be more interesting than one set exactly in the middle. Also, the length and height of each wall space will be the clue for the kind and number of plants to be used. A large wall space usually will require more plants and taller-growing ones.

Above all, planning will help you to decide the type of plants most suited to your house.

Life Cycles Of Loft Conversions

15 April 2008

Loft conversions are become a popular alternative to buying or selling a house due to the uncertainty of the property market at the moment. The most popular reason for people moving is that they need more space, however, why go through the hassle of moving when you can add an extra room onto your house at a fraction of the cost?

Few people know much about loft conversions but they’re not actually that complicated and any good company will be more than happy to answer any questions you have. The process of getting a conversion will start with your chosen company coming around your house to establish what will be the most cost efficient way of carrying out your loft conversion. They will also be able to give you design ideas and tell you what type of conversion is the most suitable for your home.

Following this consultation any plans for loft conversions are drawn up so that you can see exactly what you are going to get. This is an opportunity for you to ensure that you are getting exactly what you want and will be happy with the final result.

Providing that you are happy with what you have seen, your building plans will be submitted to your Local Authority for approval. This is an important part of the process and any good company will keep you fully updated through each stage of your application. Once this stage has been completed, the contracts department of the loft conversions company you are dealing with will compile a full list of the agreed work they are going to do for you.

This list will be turned into a document which you should then sign. There are many different reasons for this but the most important one is just in case you feel that the agreed work hasn’t been carried out. This means that you will have evidence that the contract hasn’t been fulfilled.

Once all the paper work has been completed, building work has been approved and both parties are happy a delivery date will be agreed. This means you will know exactly when all building work will be completed. From here workmen from the loft conversions company you have employed will carry out the building work until it is completed.

After this has been done company supervisors will visit your home to answer any questions that you may have. They will also check that all loft conversions comply with any building regulations. Finally, a building inspector will visit the site to inspect the conversion and ensure that it is up to a high standard.

Different Types Of Loft Conversions

15 April 2008

Loft conversions have become increasingly popular over recent years which isn’t surprising when you think of the difference they can make to your home. If you’re in the position where you need a bigger home but don’t want to move for whatever reasons, adding an extension to your home could be just the answer. Not only do you gain valuable extra space but it can significantly add to the value of your house when you decide to sell it on.

There are a number of different options available to those considering loft conversions which means that you are bound to find one that suits both you and your home.

There are two types of loft conversions, these are full conversions and shell conversions. The difference between the two depends on how much work you want your building company to do for you. If you don’t know anything about loft conversions and the work that needs to go in to them, then a full conversion is recommended. However, if you, friends or family know what they are doing and can do some of the work themselves, then a shell conversion could be for you.

A full conversion covers anything you can think of when it comes to loft conversions. This means the company you use will do a technical survey for you, will design all drawings of the conversion and ensure they comply with building regulations and work out any structural calculations. As well as this they will obtain planning permission if necessary, submit all plans to your local authority and install any insulation that is needed. Finally, they will also complete everything from skirting to doors, plaster everything and even do the plumbing and electric for you. The only thing that will be left for you to do is decorate your new room just how you want it.

A shell conversion includes any technical survey plans and designs being drawn up for you, all floor, structural work and supports being completed as well as things such as stairs and timber work. On top of this any windows, roof work and external finishings will be done as well. Although these types of loft conversions don’t include as much as full conversions, they are ideal for people who know what they are doing when it comes to building work but need an extra helping hand.

Every company who carries out loft conversions is different and therefore their ideas of full conversions and shell conversions may vary. For this reason it is recommended that you look around so you can find something that suits you the best.

Once you have decided what kind of conversion you need and want it will need to be approved by your Local Authority. Once this has been done building work can go ahead and you will be able to experience the many benefits of loft conversions.

A Look At Kitchen Design; Worktops, Appliances And Cupboards

15 April 2008

The kitchen is often considered the most important room in the house, redesigning a kitchen requires a lot of thought and effort to create the ideal space. Before visiting a supplier and considering replacing all of the worktops and cupboards there are certain considerations that should be factored in. As a room that contains many essential appliances, use of space should be a major concern.

With so many kitchen suppliers out there offering deals on worktops, cupboards, appliances and lighting solutions it is important to shop around. Getting as many quotes as possible is vital to ensure you find the best price and the most productive work schedule. Remember having a new kitchen fitted can be a stressful experience, thorough planning will help reduce this stress.

One catchphrase that is often bandied about in kitchen design circles is the ‘golden triangle.’ However technical it sounds it primarily refers to the fact that the majority of appliances should be located close to each other with worktops in between. This is a vital component of the kitchen design process as efficiency of use is always the most desirable outcome. Put simply it will make cooking less stressful and more enjoyable.

This triangle theory to kitchen design does however have a problem. It is in no way generic as people use their kitchens differently and rank the importance of certain appliances and worktops in their own way. Some would put the oven, fridge and sink as the most important while others may choose a dishwasher, microwave and washing machine as vital components of their triangle. Whatever the choice, the top three should be used as the anchor points of the kitchen triangle.

A side note to the triangle is the aesthetic pleasure that a kitchen should provide. The choice of worktops, cupboards and decor are a vital component of this and unsurprisingly the choices are limitless. Worktops come in softwood and hardwood, all with a specific varnish. Hardy materials such as granite and marble make great kitchen worktops and stunning design features. Increasingly contemporary kitchen design has started using industrial materials such as stainless steel for the truly post modernist look.

Storage should always be a major concern in kitchen design; it is easy to have too little or too much storage space. If you have too little an easy remedy is utilise a suspended rack that you could use to stow pots and pans without taking up space in the cupboards or on worktops.

Strangely it is possible to have too much storage space in a kitchen; the amount of clutter you store away soon grows and storing the out of date food that fills cupboards can be seen as a fruitless task. Also the space used for extra cupboards can often be better utilised with a breakfast bar or extra appliances.

If you are pleased with the layout of your kitchen there is no reason to go for a complete re-haul. There are certain ways to revamp your space that will give your kitchen a new lease of life at a fraction of the price of a full redesign.

Re-painting can give a fresh new look, as can re-tiling certain areas. An extremely cost effective way to revamp a kitchen is to replace the cupboard door handles or even the doors. By refitting new worktops your kitchen can take on a completely new look as will updating the current appliances.

There are many ways to improve the look of your culinary area. As the hub of most houses getting the decoration right is of paramount importance, as utilising the correct layout ensures ease of use and efficiency. Although DIY may be an option, for a clean and tidy look using professional services is advisable; after all nobody wants ill fitting worktops. Great design is essential to facilitate the harmonious family life that the majority of people desire.

Key Points To Design Your Bathroom

15 April 2008

After a long and busy day, you surely won’t skip the night without a good bath. Everyone will probably agree that after a few minutes while you settle down, a good bath is invigorating, relaxing and refreshing. A friend once said that taking a good bath is symbolic to spiritual intimacy that she does to refresh her soul after she goes through the day. No one will trade the feelings of being de-stressed without feeling distress because bathing can also wash out feelings of anger, frustration and disappointment. For some people, it does appear likely that way.

A good bathroom is simple and not complicated. There are key points to consider when designing or having someone assist you to design it. There is a tremendous amount of intimacy when one retreats to its comfort; an intimacy with the self that can be achieved by observing appropriate lighting, installing the right fixtures and using the correct tools.

Your bathroom should appear rectangular or square-like. This partition in your house must have a space in the center where one can easily see the other portions including the wash sink area, the miniature counter top, bath tub, shower and the toilet. This will create a soothing feel.

A transparent glass for the shower’s door can provide the outside view. The need for an outside view insinuates or implies a spacious room even when it is just small.

Imagine yourself walking towards your bathroom in broad daylight, a window, whether small or large can help enough to give you an idea about the weather. Aside from illumination, it is also ideal for ventilation, where you can get not only a glimpse of the sun but also a smell of fresh air.

Check your city’s building codes regarding dimensions and measurements to provide the required clearance. Make sure that you strictly follow these codes.

Floors and walls must be appropriately done according to your preferences, if you choose to have them tiled. Choose one with calming hues but are durable, dainty and can facilitate easy cleaning. Do not forget to apply water-resistant paints for a good finish. A good area rug will not only accentuate your bathroom but it is also a useful protection for cold feet.

Choose designs of bathroom fixtures that will speak of your personality, the theme and design of the room itself. Excellent quality and durability should top your list when choosing these fixtures so that they will last longer.

There are several miniature designs all around your bathroom such as cabinets, shelves, towel bars and many more to mention. It is important that they are associated in color, theme and design. Choose durable and high quality brands. While you notice that private rooms in a house are located away from the main entrance door, the same principle applies to other partitions and compartments in your bathroom. This provides a feeling of security, privacy and intimacy.

If you probably are about to take a shower this time of the day, check how well do you know your bathroom and how well do you see yourself connected to it. The significant thing about it is being able to enjoy the everyday ordinary things extraordinarily.
