Ten Ways to Decorate Your Bathroom on a Budget

16 January 2009

You may think that you don’t have enough money in your budget to decorate your bathroom. But, it can be done without spending too much money. Just changing your bathroom accessories out to new (or to accessories that you’ve found at garage sales), can’t make a dramatic difference.

First of all, take everything that can be moved out of your bathroom so that you can start with a clean slate. This means everything on the countertops, and in drawers and the medicine cabinet.

Now, make a plan. Decide what you really need to have in the bath and where you are going to put it. Clutter is something that can ruin the look of any bathroom design. Try to find places for toothbrushes, hair care supplies, and the like. Find some organizational systems that will fit in your cupboards and drawers. The more storage space that you have, the less you will be tempted to keep on top of the counters, and ruining the looks of your new room.

Here are some ideas that you can use to beautify as well as cut down on bathroom clutter:

1. Start with a fresh coat of paint. Painting a room is the quickest way to change the decor of a room. You can also paint your cabinets if they are damaged or in poor shape. Make sure that your paint will stand up to the humid conditions that all bathrooms have.

2. If you are really ambitious, you can remove the mirror above the sink and replace it with a new one. Two smaller decorative mirrors over a double vanity instead of one large mirror will bring your bathroom into a more modern style.

3. Add a nice looking hook to your bathroom door to hang up bathrobes and plastic pouches which can contain other bathroom items.

4. Change out the knobs and drawer pulls on your cabinets and drawers. Try something with a little more color or in a different style than the original knobs.

5 Replace your bathroom hardware such as bathtub and sink faucets. A new, shiny faucet will work wonders for your bath.

6 Now, change your bath towel racks and rings. Also, think about where you will keep those towels that you aren’t using. There are many decorative options like baskets and shelves that you can use. This way, you can have the colors of the towels to accent your bathroom but still keep them neat and tidy.

7. Use bathroom accessories to add color and style. Purchase shower curtains, a waste basket, liquid hand soap dispenser, soap dishes, new towels and a toothbrush holder.

8. Buy new throw rugs for the floor. They come in almost every color imaginable so try to match them to your towels and other accessories.

9. Add one or two moisture-loving plants. This will bring life to the room.

10. Finally, add a few fancy candles to add warmth.

These inexpensive ideas will beautify any bathroom without the need to totally demolish it and add all new cupboards, counters and bathroom fixtures. Give it a try and you’ll have a whole new bathroom!

Kitchen Remodeling Design Ideas and Considerations

15 April 2008

When considering the different aspects of kitchen remodeling design, you should be open to all the different ideas for planning and remodeling this area. Therefore, it is wise to make a list of the areas and items that you do not like about the existing kitchen while planning a kitchen remodel design.

Here are examples of kitchen remodeling design issues to address:

* Determine a kitchen remodel design budget, and then stick to it.

* What is the size of your family or number of people you plan to accommodate while entertaining?

* What is the number of cooks who will be using the same space?

* Consider the amount of preparation and counter space you need.

* Determine whether you have enough storage space.

* What about the replacement of some or all of your appliances?

* Consider the type of lighting you plan to use for most areas of your kitchen, whether it is natural or artificial.

* Consider the traffic flow and the work triangle, which is the most efficient distance between the oven, sink and refrigerator.

* You might consider adding or designing a kitchen island for storage, cleaning area and cook top or food preparation area.

* A kitchen remodeling design takes time and planning, so consider the type of pantry and cabinets you want and the types of materials used for the floors, countertops and backsplash.

Do you know that there are homeowners who do not cook but have a beautiful kitchen show place? Some families do a great deal of entertaining in this area that is the center of their homes. It may also function as their office, an after school work shop for homework as well as a place to cook and entertain family and friends.

Kitchen remodel designs today are more complex and expensive. The appearance of your kitchen can add to the value of your home or take away from it. However, this does not mean you have to spend $80,000 to create a beautiful and functional kitchen. When you live in an area that does not feature high-tech kitchens with large food preparation areas as well as expensive materials and finishes, it may not be wise to invest so much money on a kitchen remodeling design, since if you do sell your home, you may not get back your investment.

Most homes today feature an open plan design kitchen that provides good natural lighting. This way you, your family and friends can eat, drink, talk, watch television while preparing meals and enjoying the same open space. The most successful kitchen remodeling designs take into account various designing tips.

You do not have to spend an outrageous amount of money for a basic kitchen remodel design. For instance, when your cabinets are in good condition, you may consider staining or repainting them for a fresh appearance. It the cabinet boxes are in good shape, you might want to replace only the doors, the drawer fronts and hardware.

However, if the cabinets need replacing, there are many attractive, reasonably priced materials that can offer the special appearance you wish to create. Keep in mind that it can become very expensive when you remodel large rooms with custom cabinets made of exotic woods.

Your appliances should be energy efficient and of good quality. However, if you do not want to spend a lot of money, you can choose appliances that are all white, black or beige since they are both less expensive and just as attractive as stainless steel. Remember, a purchase of professional or commercial appliances of stainless steel will increase your budget total once you have determined the amount you want to spend per appliance and whether your existing appliances are reusable.

Always being mindful of your budget, you should know that hardwood flooring is more expensive than some tile or vinyl flooring. As long as you do not use such materials as stone, marble, granite, concrete and stainless steel, keep in mind that back splashes and countertops of more common materials will be cheaper. Rather than using imported or hand painted tiles which are expensive, choose the other types of budget friendly synthetic tiles that are both durable and beautiful.

Kitchen islands are wonderful sources for extra storage and preparation areas, with or without a sink, or you may consider installing a cook top. Consider what the available space will be, since a kitchen island does need a certain amount of space to be work efficient. For instance, when working with a small 3′ x 6′ island, you will require at least 130 square feet of floor space for the traffic flow around the island to function well, depending upon the size of the room.

No matter how simple or complex your kitchen remodeling design is, the kitchen can be useful for working on the computer, doing homework or gathering around your family and friends for eating and drinking.

Before beginning to do any work, it is a good idea to learn as much as you can about kitchen remodel design. Since the kitchen is the heart of any home and a special area, you want yours to perform its best for you now and in the future.

How Landscaping Software Can Help You Design Your Garden

15 April 2008

A lot of people start off their garden landscaping thinking that it’s going to be really simple and easy. It’s only when you actually go about making your ideas become a reality that you realize it’s not as easy as you first thought. There a huge list of things that need to be considered when planning your garden layout such as estimated quantity of materials, how much work is entailed plus all the associated costs. Making sure that everything goes to plan without any problems isn’t easy. However there are landscape designs software programs available to help you out.

Probably the most important task when designing your landscape is the measurements, yet this is the very task which often causes the most headaches. Not all of us are great at math and dealing with all these measurements can leave us somewhat frustrated. By using a good landscaping you can help eliminate this stress because they take you step-by-step through the measuring process. This means you won’t end up ordering more materials than you need and you won’t find that driveways and flower beds overlap.

However there is considerably more to landscaping software than just measurements. You can also preview how your ideas will look once completed. These are very impressive images and you’ll surprise yourself how good your design looks. You can even view the garden at various angles to make sure you are happy with what you see before doing the actual physical work.

To make the preview image even more professional and realistic, you can even add elements such as plants, ponds and patios. They often include information about different plants and how to care for them. This will help you decide what will grow well in your garden.

If you are not a professional landscaper and just want software for a one-off project you don’t want to go crazy buying the most expensive software you can find. You can find something for about $50-60 which will do everything you’ll want it to do. You should also avoid any cheap or free versions as these will not give you the results you desire. When shopping around for landscaping software, make sure you compare all the different features so you get the best for your money.

Buying this sort of software is well worth the money because it makes life a lot easier, saves you time and lets you see how the finished project will look. Not everyone is lucky enough to have the TV show Ground Force design their garden, so for the rest of us, buying some design software will help a lot.

Green Home Designs and Green Design Benefits

15 April 2008

Green home designs use eco-friendly reusable materials, furnishings and leftovers. These kind of designs feature the use of long lasting, non-toxic materials as well as recycling. Green home designs make use of materials that are renewable and long lasting. To remodel a residence with new materials every few years is not green building design.

When you use materials to be green, you restore and salvage what you have when possible. Options for green flooring design can provide you many different choices today. You can sand and refinish or even paint and stencil without using materials containing volatile organic compounds (referred to as VOC’s).

Green home designs today features the use of materials such as cork, bamboo and eucalyptus since they are earth friendly and renewable. Cork is especially good since there is no destruction of trees during extraction of the cork. Hardwood flooring can last forever and is very desirable, however, these kinds of woods are often the remnants of old growth from rain forest trees and this is not eco-friendly or green. You can select types of woods that have the approval and certification by environmental groups.

Which glues and finishes to use for floor installation are issues that should concern you since many contain toxic synthetic formaldehyde resins. It is best to use non-toxic low to no VOC sealants as well as non-toxic cleaners, polishes, finishes, refinishing and adhesive products. To do so will result in having better indoor air quality since your home produces less toxins and is a healthier environment to live in.

Even buying low to no VOC products does not guarantee your safety and good health for you and your loved ones. Since we encounter so many chemicals on a daily basis, nothing can be 100%. However, it is essential to select eco-friendly products for the green design benefits. This helps to better our environment and not expose us to as many chemicals every day.

While creating your green home designs using these ideas, be sure to include many glass window and doors as well as roof and wall skylights to allow natural lighting into your home. Skylights provide the green design benefits of reducing and avoiding moisture accumulation in a room while conserving energy consumption.

Concrete floorings have made the circle of fashion, coming back in style. They come in various colors, patterns, textures and polishes. This type of flooring is not so harmful to your health since it uses no glue, finishes or refinishing products and their chemicals.

Green home designs in the kitchen can feature the use of concrete counter tops since they are a natural appearing material and have become quite popular. They can add a modern look and style to your kitchen, bathrooms and fireplace.

Vertrazzo, which is recycled glass, is another popular choice for green kitchen counter tops. Recycled glass is attractive and comes in various colors to match your decor perfectly. You can use it as both kitchen counter tops and as a backsplash. Recycled glass tiles are another beautiful alternative in trends of green kitchen designs.

While choosing your appliances, consider their functionality, style and energy efficiency as well as your budget. When you replace appliances or remodel your kitchen, be sure to find the most energy efficient appliances available as well as those that use less water. To recycle old appliances, call your local recycling department for advice on what to do to recycle them.

Sending your appliances to a landfill or passing them on to someone else is not a good idea, since ninety-five percent of refrigerator parts are recyclable. Older models that are not as energy efficient will not save you money and they are not good for the eco-system. You should recycle all of your old kitchen appliances.

Green home designs add lots of ceiling and wall insulation to your entire home. This is most beneficial and keeps your home more energy efficient. Remember to use eco-friendly insulation materials. Always chose high performance windows and double or even triple pane windows, doors and skylights as they help conserve energy as well.

With rising energy costs, energy efficient design makes economic sense. Saving money after the initial investment, reducing exposure to toxic chemicals and helping save the environment all are goals of green home designs. Learn as much as you can about the choices you have in the green interior design products that will best serve your interests.

Useful Tips On Bathroom Remodeling

15 April 2008

Bathroom remodeling is easier and cheaper than you think, if you have a game plan. Instead of spending money on replacing all of your fixtures, upgrading a few key items can transform it into a relaxing environment. In this article, we’ve got tips on how to remodel one, without flushing your money down the toilet.

Color will set the mood. It will be the first thing someone notices when they enter the room. Ideally, use a warm color on the walls and use accent tiles and accessories to add bright accents. Warm-colored floors and tiling, including a tile backsplash, will offset the cool looks of fixtures.

A dynamic flooring pattern or a deep wall color can make the difference. For the tile selections, don’t forget to look beyond color to consider texture and tile dimensions. To highlight the tiling work, take a good look at your lighting. Soft lighting on the ceiling and vanity will help create a relaxing mood.

When bathroom remodeling, changing your sink is a quick and inexpensive way to give the bathroom in the master suite a face lift. A beautiful sink with stylish faucets will be a piece that is both decorative and functional.

Although most homes come with a standard white porcelain sink, there are gorgeous, easy to care for styles available that are made of glass, granite and ceramic. To create more space in your room, you may want to consider a pedestal sink. While shopping, have a look at sink/countertop combos. This is a smart way to cut down on cost.

For truly beautiful ones, your purpose should be to create a relaxing escape. Therefore, deciding on the perfect bathtub is paramount. A whirlpool, a soaking tub or a claw foot tub are luxurious options that can cost a pretty penny, but the investment is worth it if you love your baths.

However, you need to consider if walls will need to be moved to fit that corner Jacuzzi tub and whether or not there will be issues with drainage. Bathrooms toilets shopping should be next on the agenda.

If you’re going for style as well as functionality, then the vintage pull-chain water closet is back in style. Most toilets are available in colors to match your decor and sport features from built in fans to automatic bidets.

As the finishing touch to your bathroom remodeling foray, select cabinetry that maximizes your space and accessories that make elegant accents to your designs. If you can afford it, then hire someone to build custom cabinets that fit the room perfectly.

Coordinate the bathroom with accessories such as a shower curtain, a waste basket and matching soap decanters, some unique bathroom wall mirrors, and cups and toothbrush holders. When shopping, don’t just look at cost. You can’t put a price on the feeling of a fluffy towel after a hot bath!

How To Choose The Right Furnishings For Your Property

14 April 2008

Choosing the right furniture for a property is a challenging task. Well matched furnishings can add significant value and prestige, whereas inappropriate, dilapidated or garish furnishings and decor can detract value from a property, and easily put off potential buyers.

With so many different ways to decorate properties, it’s essential to decide on the style or theme before setting out and spending money on eye catching materials. Firstly, ask yourself, what sort of property needs furnishing? Is it your home, a first home, a rented abode or a buy-to-let property? There are universal rules to follow and definite points to remember depending on the property.

If the property is going to be lived in by you then obviously it is up to you, how you want it to be decorated. However, always remember if you ever decide to sell the property, think about furnishings that will make it look homely, try not to be too loud and above all show off the property in the best possible light.

On the other hand, if your property has been bought as a buy-to-let or is to be sold fully furnished; it’s essential to remember this will not be your home and you won’t live there. For that reason you should break all emotional attachment you might have. A number of people believe a cost-effective solution is to opt for the cheapest furniture and throw it in. Although it will make a minimal impact on the budget, it will probably only make a minimal impact on potential buyers. It will be obvious the furnishings are cheap, probably not suitable and likely to be replaced.

If cash flow is constrains you from opting for more suitable or sophisticated furnishings, don’t fret, there are still some fitting alternatives available. One popular route taken by but-to-let experts is to rent furniture. Buy-to-let furnishing specialists can provide complete furniture packs, skilfully put together to suit any home or purpose. It is a cost effective solution that can maximize a properties potential by showing prospective owners or tenants just how special it is.

As with all properties, with a view to rent or sell, it is worthwhile choosing neutral colours when it comes to decor. Keeping to paler shades and tones will reduce the risk of instantly putting off would be dwellers, since a bad first impression can jeopardise the whole property, so hide your leopard skin velour loveseat straight away!

Another point to consider before finding your perfect furnishings is safety first! It is a legal requirement that all upholstered furniture provided in furnished lettings to meet with the furniture and furnishings fire safety regulations of 1988, therefore ensure all furniture complies with this or you could face legal action.

In summary, think carefully about suitability of furniture and decorations within your property. Remember not to rush into any decisions, since it can be costly and frustrating to remove inappropriate furnishings, particularly large items such as sofas. Additionally, don’t just opt for the cheaper option if you are letting out the property, remember to consider all your options, be sure to check where the sales are or consider buy-to-let furniture specialists so you don’t have to worry about what will go and what won’t. After all, the more exclusive the furnishings and fittings are, the greater likelihood of attracting more discerning tenants who will look after and cherish your property more.

John MCe writes on behalf of Buy To Let Furnishings who are the experts in furniture packages for rented accommodation, offering cost effective, rapid, furniture packs to suit any property.

Useful Strategies To Improve Your Home

14 April 2008

Home improvement strategies can really help all of the do-it-yourselfers with their home improvement projects. Ordinarily, the majority of people who do their own home improvements do them for two main reasons. The first is to improve the physical appearance of the home by adding new elements. For example, just adding a new paint job to any room can really make it more inviting.

Improvements on the home, whether inside or out can benefit every member of the family living in the home. Additionally, the same improvements can really affect the value of the home. If the improvements are bad they can lower the value of the home and if they are good they can really raise the value of the home.

Raising the value of the home can help a person sale it easier and they can capitalize on the profits received from the sale . Home improvement projects in general are valuable endeavors that can have many advantages. Many projects start with something that needs to be fixed either inside or outside the home. For example, a couple has a new baby but only have one bedroom, they will need to add another room for the baby.

Another good example is when the owner wants to add a deck or patio to either the back or the front of the house. Although, just because the owner adds the deck, patio or new bedroom does not mean that it will increase the value of the home but it does make improvements in the family’s lifestyle.

The second type of project is upgrading the house. This is usually done before selling the house in order to have the it up to code for the new occupants. Upgrading the home can consist of many different things. Upgrading can mean the appliances or the electrical wiring or even adding new additions like rooms and bathrooms.

How to Approach Home Improvement

Whether it is small or big, any the project entails some sort of planning to ensure that the project is done right. With every home, time and money are needed to be put into it. These two resources are things that can not be replenished once they have been spent. Careful planning can ensure that both the time and money put into the home are not wasted and used wisely to ensure the results desired.

Before getting into any home improvement project, it is imperative to consider every aspect of the project. Pros and cons should always be weighed before getting into any project as to avoid wasting precious time and money that may be needed elsewhere. It can feel like you are fighting a losing battle by turning the heating on as high as it will go but still feeling cold. The money and energy used to try and heat your home is particularly wasted if you spend most of your time in one room. Flueless gas fires can be installed in any room whether it is a bedroom, lounge or dining room so you can stay warm wherever you spend most of your time.

Some people feel like no matter what they do to decorate a particular room it still looks plain and boring. If you want a totally different and unique look the flueless gas fires could be a way of achieving this.

Flueless gas fires can be a valuable source of heat in the winter months. There’s nothing more comforting than sitting in front of a nice warm fire and relaxing after a hard day at work. It can be hard to keep a house warm in winter with people walking in and out the house, drafts bringing in cold breezes and windows being left open. This is one of the reasons people like flueless gas fires because they warm the area you are in to a comfortable temperature.
